The Centre for Science Studies coordinates all the academy’s activities regarding scientific history, theory and philosophy. Its work is centred on the roll and significance of science in society – both historically and in our time. The Centre provides research facilities for visiting scientists that want to avail themselves of the Leopoldina's archives and library.
It initiates its own programs whose purpose is to update the library and the archive resources and to make them more accessible to the public. It also solicits projects and offers institutional support to the participating staffs.
Long-term projects at the Leopoldina are supervised by the Centre for Science Studies as well. Future plans include providing support to young scientists through its own grant program as well as through scholarships provided by outside sources. As part of this mission, the Centre for Science Studies also arranges seminars, symposiums and exhibitions dealing with the history of science, and in doing so is able to foster opportunities for international as well as transdisciplinary collaboration.
