As the German National Academy of Sciences, the Leopoldina actively observes and accompanies the German federal government’s foreign science policy initiatives. This also includes the participation in the bilateral years for the promotion of science, annually initiated by the german Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The German-Turkish Year of Research, Education and Innovation was opened on 23 January 2014 in Berlin.
The Leopoldina cooperated closely in past years of science with national academies in South-Africa, Russia and Brazil. Cooperation agreements (South-Africa, Russia) and continual project collaborations have resulted from this. The German-Russian Young Researchers Forum is an example of these close cooperations. It has alternately taken place four times in Germany and in Russia since the German-Russian Year of Education, Science and Innovation 2011/2012. These forums offered young scientists of both countries a platform for the discussion of current research topics and research framework.
