Research

Roni Aloni is distinguished for many pioneering scientific discoveries leading to basic understanding how phytohormones induce and regulate the differentiation, regeneration and evolution of vascular systems in plants. His theoretical and experimental contributions in tree physiology clarified how plant hormones control fibers and wood quality formation in forest trees. He has elucidated the hormonal mechanisms that regulate the differentiation of each of the cell types in the xylem and phloem of organized tissues and in tumors. This work has been essential for understanding the regulation of vascular cell size and cell patterning in plants, in both their shoots and roots; providing practical tools for improving fiber and wood quality in forest trees and other industrial plants. His hormonal research on plant tumor disease has enabled to develop ethylene insensitive, healthy fruit trees which are tumor free.
