The members of the Leopoldina are organized in 28 sections that are grouped in four classes.
The broad field of life sciences comprises both basic biological research and applied aspects, such as synthetic biology and genetic engineering. These complex areas of research require clearly defined social and political conditions. The committee helps to bridge the gap between a purely scientific understanding of the issues and their societal significance.
