After the Fukushima incident in March 2011, Federal Minister of Research Annette Schavan asked the Leopoldina to revise the "Concept for an integrated energy research program for Germany" published in 2009. The recommendations of the statement "Energy- and research-policy recommendations following the events in Fukushima" were made available for the members of the "Ethik-Kommission" (ethics commission) established by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and are integrated in the commission's final report. On June 7, 2011, Leopoldina President Jörg Hacker and the coordinator of the working group Ferdi Schüth submitted the statement to minister Schavan.
