German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina inaugurates its new headquarters in Halle (Saale)

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina inaugurates its new headquarters in Halle today with an opening ceremony and a special colloquium. In his opening speech, held in the presence of numerous politicians, academics and other high profile guests, Leopoldina President Professor Jörg Hacker focused particularly on the Leopoldina’s transformation from being a purely scholarly society into the proactive modern academy it is today. The prestigious new main building is a symbol of this transformation.

The new main building will make the Leopoldina more open to the public and effectively promote dialogue between science and politics, said Professor Jörg Hacker. “Academies of science are institutions that are able to provide independent, science-based advice on fundamental problems.” As examples of these problems, he cited climate change and the transition to renewable energy sources as well as the ethical and legal issues surrounding biotechnological research.

Jörg Hacker thanked the federal and state governments for their support in purchasing and renovating the site. The German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development provided just under 16 million euros from the second economic stimulus package for the extensive redevelopment, and the State of Saxony-Anhalt contributed almost one million euros, also from the second economic stimulus package, towards the purchase of the property.
Professor Annette Schavan, German Minister of Education and Research, said in her address: “With the move to the beautiful, newly refurbished site on the Jägerberg, the Leopoldina has found a headquarters that truly suits its purpose as the German National Academy of Science.” One of the key functions of the national academy, said Schavan, is to provide science-based advice to policymakers and society – a service which is becoming ever more important. “The growing complexity of societal processes is leading to greater demands on the scientific community to provide information relevant to policy decisions,” Schavan explained.

The Leopoldina was appointed the German National Academy of Sciences in 2008. Since then it has fulfilled its role of advising politics and society on prevailing topics of science policy. The Leopoldina also represents the German scientific community in international associations of national science academies. To equip the Leopoldina to successfully take on this new role, the team of staff at the academy was extended. Since the beginning of the year all staff working in the Presidium office, the Secretary General’s office, the administration, and the departments of international relations, political consultancy and press and public relations have been working from the new offices on the Jägerberg in Halle. The Leopoldina is financed by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (80 percent) and the State of Saxony-Anhalt (20 percent).
