Wahljahr: 2002
Sektion: Innere Medizin und Dermatologie
Stadt: Berlin
Land: Deutschland

Friedrich C. Luft is distinguished for many contributions to cardiovascular and renal diseases related to arterial hypertension. Most of these were made at the Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin-Buch to which he came in 1992. Prior to that time, he was Professor of Medicine at Indiana University in the United States. Here, he conducted studies into the relationship between dietary salt in take and hypertension, particularly the mechanisms involved in these processes. In Berlin, he has focused on cellular, experimental animal and human studies regarding hypertension. Important contributions include intracellular signaling by angiotensin II, the role of the renin-angiotensin system in mediating target-organ injury, the participation of innate immunity into these processes and investigations into the molecular genetics of hypertension and metabolic disturbances.
