Harald zur Hausen was the Vice-President of the Leopoldina between 2003 and 2009. In the year 2008 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his research on the viruses that cause cervical cancer. He continued to be proactively engaged with the Leopoldina, making frequent contributions in the form of lectures and publications.
