Conferences and Workshops of the Joint Committee on the Handling of Security-Relevant Research

The Joint Committee regularly organises conferences and workshops on the handling of security-relevant research and invites experts from various disciplines and other representatives from the German science sector. The conferences and workshops are designed both to raise awareness among researchers of security-relevant aspects of their research and to share experiences with the establishment and work of Committees on Ethics in Security-Relevant Research (KEFs).

1st KEF Forum – Joint Committee workshop on the handling of security-relevant research
Workshop, Berlin, 7 June 2018

The first KEF Forum was directed primarily at the contact persons named by the German research institutions, associations and science associations as responsible for the handling of security-relevant research, and members of the already established KEFs. The workshop centred on sharing experiences on the obstacles of establishing a KEF, on questions raised regarding consultation on security-relevant research projects and their assessment, on harmonising the procedure for dealing with security-relevant research and for raising awareness of the potential misuse of research findings and methods.

Freedom and Responsibility in IT Sciences
Workshop, Darmstadt, 27 October 2017

In October 2017, the Joint Committee organised the workshop “Freedom and Responsibility in IT Sciences” in Darmstadt, together with the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the DFG Review Board Computer Science. The workshop was designed to give the research community in IT sciences both insights into security-relevant areas, responsible conduct and perspectives of security awareness, and an opportunity for an interdisciplinary discussion of ethical issues.

Berlin, 14 April 2016

On 14 April 2016, the Joint Committee organised an informational event on implementing the recommendations of the DFG and Leopoldina on handling security-relevant research. The event was directed primarily at the contact persons named by the German research institutions as responsible for the handling of security-relevant research. Scientific Freedom and Scientific Responsibility
Symposium, Halle (Saale), 3 November 2014

The symposium organised by the German Ethics Council, the German Research Foundation and the Leopoldina addressed issues related to the handling of security-relevant research. The symposium dealt with questions regarding the area of conflict between scientific freedom and scientific responsibility, with the practicality of self-governance using ethical codes of conduct or legal regulation of security-relevant research and with certain areas of security-relevant research such as research on highly pathogenic viruses, 3D printing and big data analyses.
