To mark the 50th anniversary of his professorship, Academy members, friends and admirers of the 13th Academy President, Carl Gustav Carus, set up a foundation of around €2,000 on 2 November 1864. From 1896 onwards, the Carus Prize was awarded. When the money was lost due to hyperinflation, a Carus Medal for important research was founded in 1937.
