Fellowship Programme

Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship

The Academy awards the Leopoldina Postdoc Scholarship to outstanding postdoctoral scientists in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The programme is aimed at up-and-coming young scientists from German-speaking countries who have already begun conducting independent research in natural science and medicine. Scholarship recipients are given the opportunity to carry out their own independent project abroad at one of the most renowned research institutes in their field. German research fellows have to choose a foreign research institute, while Austrian and Swiss research fellows must select a host institute in Germany.

The programme expects recipients to return home when the funding ends and to implement their newly acquired knowledge and skills there.

  • Talented young scientists working within the natural sciences, medicine, the history of science or any other disciplines represented by sections of the Academy may apply for funding. They must have completed their doctoral degree within the last seven years. Applicants should have excellent research skills, the ability to research independently, and outstanding academic achievements.
  • Applications may be submitted at any time. Scholarships are awarded four times a year at special meetings held every three to four months.
  • There is a waiting list for candidates who present excellent applications but who cannot be funded at the time of applying due to budgetary restrictions. These applicants are then taken into consideration alongside new ones at the next meeting.
  • The funding is awarded as a scholarship and paid directly to the person in question. It comprises the basic scholarship grant (according to the rates set by the German Research Foundation [DFG] for postdoctoral or research scientists), any supplements (relating to civil status or location) and a monthly allowance of €250 for costs and materials (travel costs, laboratory supplies, etc.). Any additional costs should be itemised separately on the funding application.
  • Particularly outstanding achievements during the funding period may lead to a ten-percent increase in the basic scholarship grant.
  • Research fellows may stay at the host institute for up to three years.
  • They should try to remain as financially independent of the host institute as possible.
  • The Academy’s fellowship programme coordinator will be available for questions or assistance throughout the funding period. Research fellows are thus allocated a personal supervisor for the entire funding period.
