|Location:||Leopoldina, Library, August-Bebel-Straße 50a, 06108 Halle (Saale)|
The fifth president of the Leopoldina, Johann Jakob Baier, opened the Academy library in the former Leopoldina headquarters of Nuremberg with a deed of foundation dated 17 September 1731. For the library’s premises, the city leased the Academy a room in the former church of St Catherine’s (Katharinenkirche). Two double-door cabinets were purchased for the safe storage of the precious books, and the first book was bought using Academy funds. Since then, the Leopoldina’s collection of important science-history documents has grown to a considerable size, with the archive alone currently storing around 1,700 metres of records. The library contains over 260,000 books, monographs and journals on the natural sciences and medicine, making it both a rich historical archive and a bountiful source of current scientific knowledge. These treasures of the Leopoldina are also treasures for research.
The exhibition “Treasure for public benefit – A glimpse into the collections of the Leopoldina” contains collected works from the Leopoldina’s early years, classics of science history, and unique biographical documents of Academy members. It also presents current research projects on the history of science.
Books, photographs and letters from the Academy library and archive are supplemented by findings from research projects carried out at the Leopoldina Centre for Science Studies. This is the first time that the exhibits of these three Leopoldina institutions have been combined. Together, they tell an exciting story and provide a comprehensive insight into the history and importance of the Leopoldina and its members over the centuries.
