Leopoldina Ukraine Distinguished Fellowship

The German National Academy of Sciences introduces a special fellowship for scientists from Ukraine who have their careers in science endangered or interrupted by the war to resume or continue their research activities, and remain in academia. The funding is person-related and designed for outstanding post-doctoral level scientists from Ukraine to work on an independent research project at a university or research institution in Germany for an initial period of one year, while maintaining their affiliation at a Ukrainian institution.

An agreement has to be concluded with the host institution and the supervisor in Germany prior to receiving the fellowship.

Funding and Benefits

  • A monthly stipend of € 2, 400 during the stay in Germany;
  • A monthly lump sum for travel and material costs of € 100;
  • A monthly child allowance of € 400 for the first child and € 100 for every additional child;
  • Support by the host institution and / or the supervisor for career development and international networking.

Eligibility

The funding programme is open to outstanding scientists who have completed their doctorate (postdocs). Generally, applicants are eligible for funding up to 7 years after completing their doctorate or equivalent academic degree. Applicants must have Ukrainian citizenship. Applications can be submitted at any time and from any location, regardless of whether the applicant has already left Ukraine or not.

Application

Applications in German or English can be submitted at any time. The complete applications received will be evaluated and decided upon. No legal entitlement to funding is constituted. Applications must include the following:

  • An application and motivation letter;
  • A research proposal / project executive summary of the planned project (maximum 2 pages), with a letter of acceptance by a host institution in Germany and a letter of recommendation from the supervisor there;
  • A personal CV, including the 5 most important and thematically relevant scientific publications or lectures, posters or similar (maximum 3 pages);
  • Personal academic certificates: External Independent Testing / university entrance qualification or equivalent, Master or equivalent as well as doctorate / Candidate of Sciences / Doctor of Philosophy / PhD or equivalent;
  • A letter of recommendation from a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Application

The programme has been suspended, as capacities are exhausted. Until further notice, applications will not be accepted.
