European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC)

European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC)

EASAC brings together the National Academies of Science of the EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The aim of EASAC is to speak as the collective voice of EU National Academies and provide science-based advice to EU institutions on policy-relevant issue.

The EASAC prepares statements, commentaries and articles for scientific journals on current topics related to the fields of energy, environment and biosciences. Topic proposals are either provided by the scientific community itself or submitted to EASAC by EU institutions. All publications are published on the official EASAC website.

EASAC is the affiliated regional network of the global academy network IAP in Europe and a member of the project consortium SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies). As part of the European Commission’s Scientific Advice Mechanism, SAM, SAPEA prepares independent statements and evidence-based recommendations on issues of particular relevance at the EU level.

The National Academies of Science of the EU member states have been working jointly in the EASAC since 2001. The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina is also a member of this network and hosted the EASAC office from 2010 to 2022. The office was previously hosted by the British Royal Society.
