The scientic work of Bernhard Zwißler has focused on the evaluation of the interface between heart and lung (cardiopulmonary interaction) and the development of new therapeutic concepts in acute lung injury. He was among the first to describe the efficacy of inhaled drugs in pulmonary hypertension and in patients with acute lung injury. His publications have contributed to a better understanding of the development of acute right heart failure and to a standardized treatment of this otherwise often lethal disease.
