Sein erster Fund der Hochdruckmodifikation von Quarz (Coesit) in metamorphen Gesteinen bewies, dass die kontinentale Kruste bis in von der klassischen Plattentektonik unerwartete Tiefen subduziert werden kann, und öffnete so den neuen Bereich der »Ultrahochdruckmetamorphose«. Weitere Forschungen führte Chopin in Zusammenarbeit mit Kristallographen und Thermodynamikern durch. Seine experimentellen Arbeiten beruhen oft auf der unmittelbaren Anregung durch Naturbeobachtung.
