Research

The scientific opus or Christoph Rüchardt concentrates on the investigation of organic reaction mechanisms, short living intermediates, e. g. carbocaions and free radicals, and on the determination of structures and the thermochemistry of strained hydrocarbons.
The following topics are representative:

  • Structure Reactivity Relationships in the chemistry of free radicals (e. g. peroxides, azoalkanes, diazonium salts)
  • The effects of strain on the structures of hydrocarbons and on the reactivities in thermolysis and solvolysis reactions
  • Anomeric and conformational effects
  • Determination of heats of formation, strain enthalpies and C-C-bond enthalpies by thermochemistry and molecular mechanics calculations
  • Non catalyzed H-transfer reactions
  • Fullerenes and Fulleranes
  • Rearrangement reactions
  • Assymetric synthesis
  • Wittig reaction

Rüchardt was extensively active in the academic self organization. He was Rector of the University of Freiburg (1987 – 1991) and has initiated then the foundation of the very successful new Department of Applied Science (Technical Informatics and Microsystems Technology).
