Dieter Kohn belongs to the generation of orthopaedic surgeons that has been involved in the transition process making arthroscopy from an experimental to a routine procedure in Germany. During his residency at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and as a registrar at the Orthopaedic Hospital Hannover Medical School his scientific work was centered on arthroscopy and orthopaedic sports medicine. He has published about the topics of shoulder arthroscopy, meniscus reconstruction, allograft meniscus transplantation and knee anatomy. He has obtained several national and international scientific awards for his work. He was a honorary member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America AANA and of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and a recent co-editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy. Later his scientific interest was centred on evaluation of arthroplasty by radiostereometry analysis (RSA) and on cartilage research.
