Eugen Seibold is distinguished by his work in marine Gology.
His early studies dealt with sedimentology, structural Geology and Micropaleontology (together with Dr. Ilse Seibold) in South Germany. Soon later his field of research became marine Geology. He was engaged in the commissioning of the Research vessel “Meteor” and was leader of several expeditions to the Indian and Atlantic Ocean. His interest was centered on the influence of climate, water movement and morphology of the sea floor on sedimentation. In this respect the Baltic as an adjacent sea was the “humid” model compared with the “arid” Persian Gulf. The investigations were extended to the continental margin off North West Africa and deepened by consideration of the Earth history.
With this comprehensive view he contributed to general environmental research. He was Co-chief Scientist on the US drillship “Glomar Challenger” on Leg 41 where the Jurassic age of the Atlantic off Senegal could be proved. Thus, the Geological Institute of the University of Kiel with its coworkers and PhD-students became the nucleus of marine Geology in Post War Germany.
After his retirement Seibold was engaged in the expansion of the archive for the History of Geology at the University Library of Freiburg (together with Ilse Seibold) and published regularly on such themes.
