Hans Frauenfelder, an experimental physicist, has explored a broad range of phenomena. He discovered perturbed angular correlation, studied nuclear energy levels, probed conservation laws, and used the Mössbauer effect to investigate condensed matter and biological systems. In over 40 years, he has studied the physics of proteins. He has introduced the concepts of substates and of the energy landscape and is now using the analogy of proteins to glasses and supercooled liquids to understand the dynamics of biomolecules.
