Hartmut Esser is distinguished for his research on sociological theory, specifically theories of rational choice, theory construction in the social sciences and sociological theories of action. His seminal research on language and integration has sparked ongoing public debate in an increasingly “multicultural” society. The author of a meanwhile standard canon of sociology with the book “Soziologie. Allgemeine Grundlagen” and a six-volume series on “Soziologie. Spezielle Grundlagen”, Esser has published extensively on sociological theory, family sociology and diverse aspects of migration.
