Heinz Penzlin published numerous scientific contributions of general interest on the fields of comparative animal physiology, neurobiology of Insects (neuropeptides) and history and theory of biology. By his widely spread "Lehrbuch der Tierphysiologie", which reached seven editions, he considerably promoted the education of the students at the universities on this important scientific field. Twenty three years, he was at the head of the institute of general zoology and animal physiology at the Friedrich-Schiller-University in Jena.
