Braunschweig’s interests lie with the combination of organoelement and organometallic chemistry. His work on transition metal complexes of boron – particularly on borylene- and oxoborylcomplexes – has received major attention. Here, it became possible to establish a hitherto unknown class of organometallics, to elucidate their electronic structure and to disclose applications in synthesis e.g. for the functionalization of unsaturated organic substrates. Further emphasis is on organometallic polymers, boron-based conjugated systems and catalysis.
