J. R. Kalden is distinguished for quite a number of important contributions to the field of clinical immunology/rheumatology. His research has focused on the investigation of immunopathogenic mechanisms of autoimmune rheumatic diseases, combined with the development of new therapeutic principles. The investigations were performed during his nearly 30 years of directorship of the Department for Internal Medicine III and the associated Institute for Clinical Immunology, Medical Faculty and University Erlangen-Nuremberg. J. R. Kalden was one of the initiators of different major central research grants at the Medical Faculty. His scientific contributions have led to a number of national and international awards.
