Jochem Marotzke’s main research areas are the role of the large-scale ocean circulation in climate, the impact of climate change, and climate dynamics. His scientific methods are theory, modeling, observations, and, in particular, the synthesis of all three approaches. He spent many years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the U.S.A. and at the Southampton Oceanography Centre, UK. In 2003 he joined the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, as Scientific Member, Director, and Head of the Department ‘The Ocean in the Earth System’.
