Johann-Dietrich Wörner worked 10 years as a consultant within an internationally active consulting office and participated in interesting projects on a national and international level. His activities as an engineer, which covered earthquake resistant design of nuclear power plants, is the central basis of his scientific work as a professor at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (since 1990). His specialities are in particular relevant aspects of safety of buildings taking into account special demands/actions (such as earthquake, explosions, water endangering substances) and "new" construction materials for civil structures (such as fibre concrete, textile concrete, glass, plastics). He has been Chairman of the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) between 2007 and 2015. Since 2015, he is director of the European Space Agency (ESA).
