Jürgen Baumert’s major research interests are in the fields of teaching and learning, cognitive and motivational development in adolescence, international assessments of student performance, and the development of education systems. His contributions in pioneering the large-scale analysis of the German education system and drawing attention to educational issues affecting society as a whole are virtually unparalleled. He gained particular public recognition as head of the first cycle of the PISA study in Germany. In this function, he succeeded in sensitizing broad sections of the population to current educational issues. Jürgen Baumert is one of Germany’s most influential educational researchers, forging links between politics and science through his work in committees and advisory panels.
