Jürgen Jost has made important contributions to a wide range of mathematical fields. He is a founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig and has also built up an internationally highly recognized group for interdisciplinary research on complex systems.
An important aspect of his mathematical works concerns the connection between geometry and analysis and the relations with high temperature theoretical physics. His interdisciplinary contributions range from the conceptual foundations of molecular and evolutionary biology to information theoretical approaches to neuroscience and the theory of cognition and general system theoretical considerations. These works utilize a wide spectrum of mathematical methods and contain, for instance, the mathematical analysis of networks from different domains.
