Karl Decker's major research topics were the pathway of nicotine degradation in bacteria, the energy metabolism of an anaerobic bacterium and, mainly, investigations of inflammatory processes in the liver. Following the establishment of the animal model “galactosamine hepatitis” the studies of his laboratory focussed on the role of non-parenchymal liver cells and the signal molecules produced by them in the development of liver inflammation.
