Karl-Heinz Leven, medical historian, is head of the Institute for the History of Medicine and Medical Ethics at the University of Erlangen, after several years at the „Militärgeschichtliches Forschungsamt“ (Freiburg) and the universities of Düsseldorf and Freiburg. His fields of research include the history of epidemics, ancient and byzantine medicine, history of the medical faculty, medicine in NS-Germany and history of medical ethics. An international project initiated and directed by him lead to the publication of the first dictionary of ancient medicine (Leven, K.-H., Ed., Antike Medizin. Ein Lexikon. München 2005).
