Prof. Dr.

Peter Gruss

Year of election: 1995
Section: Genetics/Molecular Biology and Cell Biology
City: Munich
Country: Germany

Peter Gruss has been a pioneer in the field of transcriptional control. He was a key player in identifying by means of the homology approach control genes that govern the formation of a vertebrate body. His studies showed that Pax6 is an essential gene in the development of the eye as well as the pancreas. He furthermore showed that Pax4 is in the formation of the insulin-producing β-cells. The latter gene will pave the way for regenerative processes that might help us to restore defective β-cells in diabetic patients.
