Sara van de Geer has done seminal work in the field of nonparametric and high-dimensional statistics. She was one of the early pioneers developing the applications of empirical process theory indexed by functions to statistical methods for estimating abstract parameters. She put forward the foundations for the theoretical properties of estimation procedures for problems with unknown sparsity.
Her work has strong impact on modern statistics and statistical learning theory.
