Prof. Dr.

Tadamitsu Kishimoto

Year of election: 2005
Section: Microbiology and Immunology
City: Osaka
Country: Japan

Tadamitsu Kishimoto is Professor for Immunology and has made pioneering contributions to the elucidation of the biological roles of cytokines, soluble factors that are critical mediators of immune responses. He discovered the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) and cloned the IL-6 gene. He further determined the mechanisms by which cytokines activate immune cells, through identification of the molecules involved in IL-6-mediated signal transduction.
His research has not been limited to the field of molecular biology, but has also made major contributions in the field of clinical medicine.
On the basis of his study, Tocilizumab, a humanized anti-IL-6 receptor antibody has been developed and is now worldwidely used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and chronic inflammatory diseases.
