Thorsten Bach studies in his research all aspects of synthetic organic chemistry. The synthesis of natural products with biological activity needs to be mentioned with antiinfective and cytotoxic substances representing particularly attractive targets. Examples for successfully completed total syntheses include the antiinfective natural products wailupemycin B and GE2270 A. Methodology work focuses on stereoselective catalytic processes involving short-lived intermediates (radicals, carbocations) and on photochemical reactions. His group achieved the first catalytic enantioselective photochemical reaction employing a chiral sensitizer and the first intermolecular diastereoselective reactions of free benzylic carbocations.
