Research

Research priorities: rhinosinusitis, paranasal sinus tumours, sinonasal tumours, head and neck surgery, endoscopic sinus surgery

Valerie J. Lund is an ear, nose and throat doctor. The focus of her research is diseases of the nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses as well as nasal polyps. She has made groundbreaking studies identifying the causes of nasal and sinus problems and introduced important diagnostic methods.

Lund deals with all the diseases of the nose, from allergies and inflammations to infections and nasal tumours. One of her key focuses is chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), which is chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa accompanied by inflammation of the nasal sinuses. She and her team conducted long-term studies on rhinosinusitis and developed considerable evidence concerning the efficacy of treatments.

Nasal sinus tumours (sinonasal tumours) represent a further priority in her work. Lund has decades long experience in endoscopic paranasal sinus operations and in ear, nose and throat surgery (otolaryngology). Her field of expertise ranges from open cancer surgery to tiny interventions with minimally invasive surgery using the most current state-of-the-art technology. In randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in medical and surgical therapy, her research group studied chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, and sinonasal neoplasia.

She and her team have also developed surgical techniques in this field and have played a significant role in increasing the use of endoscopic sinus surgery internationally. Her work on endoscopic treatment of sinus cancer has saved many patients from radical and disfiguring surgery.
