In 2018, the Leopoldina is in its tenth year of being German National Academy of Sciences. Ten years ago, the academy took over the task as scientific advisor of politics and society. Together with other Science Academies, it displays the state of research and addresses fundamental questions of our time. As National Academy, the Leopoldina represents the German science in international relations.
Central topic areas are currently the digitalization and its impact on society, questions of world nutrition, disease control and demographic transition. In the last ten years, particular attention was engaged by the energy-policy recommendations after the events of Fukushima (2011), the statement on preimplantation genetic diagnosis (2011), the analysis of chances and limits of bioenergy (2012/13) and about palliative care in Germany (2015). The usage of new methods to modify the genome are continuously discussed since the statement about opportunities and limits of genome editing. In this year, fundamental ethical questions in the medical field will be central topic as well as social life in a digitalized society.
The Joint Science Conference of Germany appointed the Leopoldina as German National Academy of Sciences on 14 July 2008. With the appointment, the academy took over the scientific policy advice in close cooperation with the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering.
