The Friends of the Leopoldina (Leopoldina Akademie Freundeskreis e.V.) is once again issuing a call for applications for the Johann-Lorenz-Bausch Fellowship for 2023. The fellowship is aimed at junior scientists who are researching the history of science and whose works fits with the project and activities portfolio of the Centre for Science Studies. Successful candidates can work on-site at the Leopoldina.

The grant can be awarded for a period of up to four months and amounts to €1,600 a month for doctoral candidates and to €2,300 for postdocs. A travel allowance for fellows arriving from abroad is also possible. During their research stay fellows have access to the Leopoldina’s library and archive as well as to relevant local and regional libraries and archives. The place of work for the duration of the fellowship is the Leopoldina Centre for Science Studies in Halle (Saale). The centre offers a suitable working environment and facilitates exchange with other ongoing research projects and members of the Leopoldina.

The fellowship is aimed at young scientists and researchers who work academically in the field of the history of science in a narrower or wider sense. It is not limited to specific disciplines or methods. Applications must be received by the Leopoldina Centre for Science Studies by 15 December 2022.

The fellowship is named after the physician Johann Lorenz Bausch (1605-1665). Together with Johann M. Fehr, Georg B. Metzger and Georg B. Wohlfahrt, he founded the Academia naturae curiosorum, today's German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, in Schweinfurt on 1 January 1652. He was the organisation’s first president until the end of his life.
