German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina signs cooperation agreements with the national academies of sciences of South Korea and India

As part of the festivities surrounding the inauguration of its new main building in Halle, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina will today sign cooperation agreements with the national academies of sciences of South Korea and India. The aim of the agreements is to create a basis for an ongoing exchange of knowledge. Leopoldina President Jörg Hacker will sign the agreements with Kil-Saeng Chung, President of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, and Krishan Lal, President of the Indian National Science Academy.

The Leopoldina is entering into a new agreement with the South Korean academy. “Just as they do at the Leopoldina, the life sciences play a major role in the work of the Korean national academy. The academy is a key player in Korean policy advice and an important link to the whole of Asia,” said Leopoldina President Jörg Hacker. He went on to say that there were many scientific links between the two academies, particularly with regard to energy and water issues, and in the field of personalised medicine. The first collaborative events on these and other subjects will take place in 2012.

The agreement signed with the Indian national academy in New Delhi in 2007 is being renewed today. “Like Korea, India is one of the most dynamic countries in terms of research,” said President Hacker. He explained that both academies have already benefitted from exchanging information at numerous symposia held in recent years on subjects such as climate change, infectious diseases, green genetic engineering and plant biology.

Since the Leopoldina was appointed the German National Academy of Sciences in 2008, it has served as the voice of German science in international academic dialogue and has cooperated with scientific academies on every continent. Around one quarter of the Academy’s members represent more than 30 nationalities. The discussion of current scientific issues in top-flight international symposia is an important aspect of the Leopoldina’s international activities. The Leopoldina also provides science-based policy advice on an international level.
