Leopoldina Symposium Concerning Competition for Agricultural Lands

The world population´s demand for food increases steadily. At the same time, more and more land is being used for the production of bioenergy crops like rapeseed and maize. In order to fulfil the vision of an agriculture that produces raw materials for making other things, more land will be required. What future model of agrarian land use can serve to confront this growing competition for arable land? On 28 and 29 October, this question will be addressed at a Leopoldina Symposium to take place at the German National Academy of Sciences in Halle (Saale).

The title of the conference is „Das zukünftige Modell der agrarischen Landnutzung  –  Intensivierung und Ökologisierung?“ (A Future Model of Agrarian Land Use – Intensification and Greening?). It will take place on 28 and 29 October at the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle (Saale) and will include scientists from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Great Britain. The panel of experts will examine how the worldwide demand for agricultural raw materials can be met in the future.

The topics of the conference will include, among others, increasing productivity through plant breeding, the worldwide logistics for the production and trade of agricultural commodities, the potential of plant biotechnology in developing countries as well as ecological and ethical issues concerning future land use.

As part of the symposium, there will also be a discussion group entitled „Nahrung, Energie, Rohstoffe: Die Konkurrenz um knappes Land“ (Nutrition, Energy, Raw Materials: the Competition for Scarce Land) which begins on Monday, 17 October at 5:00 pm. The discussion panel will include Professor Olaf Christen and Professor Ingo Pies from the University of Halle as well as Dr. Dietrich Schulz from the Federal Environment Agency and Clemens Neumann, Ministerialdirektor (Under-Secretary) in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
