Since being named German National Academy of Sciences ten years ago, the Leopoldina has evolved into a hub for dialogue between the scientific community and society as a whole. This special edition of the newsletter gives an insight into the diverse range of topics that the Leopoldina has dedicated itself to and will continue to work on – topics with a strong scientific grounding and far-reaching consequences for society as a whole.
Renewable energies, artificial intelligence, genome editing: these buzzwords stand for scientific discoveries and technological innovations which are already fundamentally changing our society. But what form should this change take? Quick and comprehensive access to the latest research is essential for informed discussion and responsible decision-making on this issue. We thus rightly expect the scientific community not just to develop new knowledge but also to create reliable channels for exchange with politicians and the public. Since 2008, the Leopoldina takes over this task at a national and an international level, in close collaboration with other academies and scientific institutions.
