How can we deal with migration to Germany today? What responsibilities should we assign to our state and society regarding migrants not protected under the refugee convention? This topic will be discussed by a joint Symposium of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW). The Symposium takes place on Thursday, January 31, 2019, in Berlin.

The Symposium is dealing with questions about migration from different angles. Chaired by Prof. Reinhard Merkel (Hamburg), member of the Leopoldina, and Prof. Julian Nida-Rümelin (München), member of the BBAW, the participants of the conference discuss normative criteria that may guide answers to these questions from a juridical and philosophical perspective.

One of the speakers is Prof. David Miller (Oxford), who talks about the question “What do democracies owe to migrants?”. Prof. Martin Nettesheim (Tübingen) and Prof. Daniel Thym (Konstanz) present the legal dimension, while Prof. Olivier Godechot (Paris) and Prof. Thomas Faist (Bielefeld) describe the social sciences dimension.

Both academies just dealt with the topic in the past. In 2018 the joint statement “Traumatisierte Flüchtlinge – schnelle Hilfe ist jetzt nötig“ was published.
