Treatment of COVID-19 and pandemic preparedness: The Leopoldina recommends more intensive research on antiviral medications

The availability of highly effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 marks a great advancement in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, there is still an unmet need for antiviral medication. Firstly, effective and affordable antiviral agents specifically for the treatment of COVID-19 are required. Secondly, broad-spectrum antivirals that are effective against multiple forms of a virus family must be developed in preparation for future pandemics. This is the message from the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in their ad hoc statement "Antivirals against SARS-CoV-2: current situation and approaches to improved preparation for future pandemics", which is now available in English. In the publication, the scientists explain why antiviral agents are needed, how these can be discovered and developed, and what kind of organisational structures this requires.

Über Verbotenes reden: Podiumsdiskussion zur Forschung an menschlichen Embryonen in Deutschland

Menschliche Embryonen stehen in Deutschland unter besonderem gesetzlichen Schutz. Weder die Forschung daran noch die Gewinnung von Stammzellen daraus sind erlaubt. Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, die mit humanen embryonalen Stammzellen arbeiten möchten, können diese nur unter strengen Auflagen importieren. Dazu müssen sie nachweisen, hochrangige Forschungsziele zu verfolgen. Von Fortschritten, die in anderen Ländern durch Forschung in diesem Bereich erzielt werden, profitiert Deutschland aber durchaus. Dies betrifft etwa die Verbesserung reproduktionsmedizinischer Behandlungen. Sollte die Forschung an menschlichen Embryonen also auch in Deutschland ermöglicht werden? Economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic: The Leopoldina highlights possible courses of action for economic and social policy

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about new medium- and long-term challenges in Germany that will need to be addressed by economic and social policy. It has also exposed existing problems where action is needed now more than ever. In the statement “Economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic – Analysis and possible courses of action”, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina analyses the current economic and social policy situation in Germany and suggests what measures could be taken to meet the challenges posed by the structural change facing the country. The scientists recommend courses of action in four areas: structural change and prerequisites for sustainable economic growth; inequality and distribution; capacity of government organisations at national and international level; and sustainability of public finances.

The Stifterverband and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina have honoured haematologist, oncologist and immunologist Prof. Dr. Christoph Huber with a special edition of the Carl-Friedrich-von-Weizsäcker Prize. The award recognises Prof. Huber's contribution to research and knowledge translation in the field of cancer immunotherapy. His research provided an important foundation for the development of an mRNA vaccine against COVID-19, which proved such a vital tool for managing the pandemic. The Carl-Friedrich-von-Weizsäcker-Prize is endowed with 50,000 euros and honours researchers who have made a valuable scientific contribution to resolving key societal challenges.
