Leopoldina President Gerald Haug congratulates Academy member Benjamin List on receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The chemist Benjamin List, a member of the Leopoldina, is awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2021. List receives this distinction together with David W.C. MacMillan, a British scientist conducting research in the USA, for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis. This is a precise tool with which molecules can be constructed more efficiently. According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, the method has had a great impact on pharmaceutical research and has made chemistry greener.

Wir und die „Anderen“: Leopoldina widmet sich dem Thema Identität

Herkunft, Hautfarbe, Gender, Religion – in aktuellen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Auseinandersetzungen spielen Gruppendifferenzen oftmals eine wichtige Rolle. Menschen definieren sich über Gruppenzugehörigkeiten. Daraus entstehen Identitäten, die häufig zur Ausgrenzung des jeweiligen „Anderen“ führen. In verschärfter Form können solche Auseinandersetzungen den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt gefährden. Denn dieser braucht eine möglichst breite Inklusion und gemeinsame gruppenübergreifende Grundwerte. Human Activity and Biodiversity: Leopoldina Annual Assembly discusses the Value and Protection of Diversity

The decline of biodiversity is one of the greatest societal challenges of the 21st century. This is why “Biodiversity and the Future of Diversity” was chosen as the topic of this year’s Annual Assembly of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, which is being held in Halle (Saale) on Friday, 24 September, and Saturday, 25 September. Researchers are coming together for two days to discuss why biodiversity must be preserved and promoted and how this can be achieved. Anja Karliczek, the German Federal Minister of Education and Research, and Dr. Reiner Haseloff, Minister-President of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, gave opening remarks in the morning. All Annual Assembly sessions are being livestreamed.

COVID-19 pandemic: mitigating the consequences for children and adolescents and developing improved support structures

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a wide range of consequences for children and adolescents when it comes to education, social interaction, socioemotional development, physical activity and psychological wellbeing. Many of them will be able to overcome these consequences. However, others will continue to feel the effects of the deficits in the medium and probably long term. With a view to counteracting this impact, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina has published the ad hoc statement “Children and adolescents in the COVID-19 pandemic: Psychosocial and educational challenges and opportunities”, now available in English, and recommends the development and expansion of support and educational structures. These should address current inequalities in education and development in a sustainable manner, thus going beyond the mitigation of disadvantages caused by the pandemic to improve the situation with reference to the pre-pandemic status quo.

Im Bewusstsein der besonderen Verantwortung und Vorbildfunktion der Wissenschaftseinrichtungen hat sich die Allianz der Wissenschaftsorganisationen im Rahmen ihrer Klausursitzung mit Nachdruck dazu bekannt, spätestens bis zum Jahr 2035 Klimaneutralität in ihren Arbeitsweisen und Forschungsprozessen zu erreichen. Hierzu müssen jedoch die Rahmenbedingungen, einschließlich der infrastrukturellen Voraussetzungen, gemeinsam mit der Politik in Bund und Ländern so verändert werden, dass alle Wissenschaftseinrichtungen ihren Beitrag zur Erreichung dieses Ziels leisten können. Mit Blick auf die in den Wissenschaftsorganisationen entwickelten Konzepte und Maßnahmen fordert die Allianz Bund und Länder dazu auf, die erforderlichen rechtlichen und finanziellen Voraussetzungen dafür zu schaffen, den vielfach bereits eingeschlagenen Weg zur Klimaneutralität und Nachhaltigkeit entschlossen vorantreiben zu können.

Acht Preise und Medaillen werden im Rahmen der feierlichen Eröffnung – vorbehaltlich der dann vorherrschenden Pandemie-Situation – am Hauptsitz der Leopoldina in Halle (Saale) am Freitag, 24. September 2021, überreicht. Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Pfanner erhält die Schleiden-Medaille im Rahmen einer Veranstaltung im Frühjahr 2022.
