Wissenschaftsorganisationen zur Coronavirus-Pandemie: Die Situation ist ernst

Gemeinsame Erklärung „Coronavirus-Pandemie: Es ist ernst“ der Präsidentin der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft und der Präsidenten der Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft, der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft und der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina.

Seit einigen Wochen ist ein dramatischer Anstieg der Coronavirus-Infektionen in Europa zu verzeichnen, der inzwischen auch Deutschland erreicht hat. Dieser ist wegen der hohen Fallzahlen an vielen Orten nicht mehr kontrollierbar und kann eine beträchtliche Zahl von Behandlungsbedürftigen in den Krankenhäusern und einen deutlichen Anstieg der Sterbezahlen in Deutschland zur Folge haben. Um dies noch zu verhindern, fordern die Präsidentin und die Präsidenten von sechs Wissenschaftsorganisationen klare Entscheidungen, die schnell umgesetzt werden. Aktuell könne die Ausbreitung des Virus in vielen Regionen von den Gesundheitsämtern aus Kapazitätsgründen nicht mehr adäquat nachverfolgt werden. Um diese Nachverfolgung wieder zu ermöglichen, müssten Kontakte, die potentiell zu einer Infektion führen, systematisch reduziert werden. Je früher und konsequenter alle Kontakte, die ohne die aktuell geltenden Hygiene- und Vorsichtsmaßnahmen stattfinden, eingeschränkt würden, desto kürzer könnten diese Beschränkungen sein.

Die gestern getroffenen Entscheidungen und aufgestellten Regelungen der Bund-/Länder-Runde zur Coronavirus-Pandemie sind aus Sicht der Nationalen Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina nicht ausreichend, um das Infektionsgeschehen zu kontrollieren und einzudämmen.

Clear and standardized corona rules: Leopoldina appeals to federal and state governments

Since the end of July, the number of new infections with the coronavirus has been on the rise again in Germany. Because of falling temperatures and group activities being relocated indoors, the pandemic's development is at risk of becoming difficult to control again. In its ad-hoc statement “Coronavirus pandemic: Establishing effective rules for autumn and winter” the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina points out that to counter this threat in time and maintain public life in the coming months, protective measures must be taken now. The Leopoldina appeals to all responsible parties at the federal and state levels to quickly agree on national, effective, and standardized rules for preventive measures and to ensure that these measures are implemented and complied with more consistently than has been the case to date.

Leopoldina president Gerald Haug congratulates Academy member Emmanuelle Charpentier on receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry

The Berlin-based biochemist and microbiologist Emmanuelle Charpentier, a Leopoldina member since 2015, is being honored with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Charpentier receives the award for the development of a method for genome editing. She is awarded the Nobel Prize jointly with biochemist and molecular biologist Jennifer Doudna (Berkeley/USA).

Leopoldina president Gerald Haug congratulates Leopoldina member Reinhard Genzel on receiving the Nobel Prize in Physics

The astrophysicist and Leopoldina member Reinhard Genzel is awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. Genzel receives this distinction together with US-American astronomer Andrea Ghez for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy, the Milky Way. Both scientists are jointly awarded one half of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics. The other half is given to the British mathematician and physicist Roger Penrose for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity.

Die Energiewende schreitet voran, doch das Strommarktdesign hinkt hinterher. Mit dem Wandel hin zu klimafreundlichen Alternativen in den Sektoren Verkehr und Wärme steigt der Bedarf an grünem Strom. Um diesen zu decken, genügt es jedoch nicht, Wind- und Solarenergie sowie Netzausbau voranzutreiben. Das Akademienprojekt „Energiesysteme der Zukunft“ macht in zwei Stellungnahmen Vorschläge für ein zeitgemäßes Marktdesign, das die Sektorenkopplung fördert und Netzengpässe effektiv und effizient bewältigt.

How education can succeed in times of crises: Leopoldina publishes English version of its fifth ad-hoc statement on the coronavirus pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic and all measures taken to curb the spreading of the infection have led to a situation where many childcare facilities and schools were temporarily unable to fulfill their educational mandate. Others were only able to comply with this mandate to a very limited extent. A reliable technological and organizational infrastructure, which could compensate for a complete shutdown of educational institutions, is not yet available in Germany. Children and young people, their families and educational professionals are therefore particularly affected by the current crisis. In the ad-hoc statement “The Coronavirus Pandemic: Towards a Crisis-Resistant Education System”, the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina indicates suitable measures, outlining how the existing education system can become more resilient and react more flexibly under crisis conditions. The document is a translation of the original statement published in German that was addressed to the responsible stakeholders in the national education system, i.e. state ministries, state institutes, education providers as well as day-care centers and schools.

Health, Sustainability, and Digitization ‒ Science Academies submit recommendations to the G20 countries

In the run-up to the summit of the G20 countries in November 2020 to be held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), the science academies of these countries have presented their joint statement "Foresight: Science for Navigating Critical Transitions". The paper was handed over to the Saudi Arabian G20 presidency on Saturday. In their statement, the academies of science emphasize the necessity to consider global challenges in all their complexity and cross-linkage and emphasize the contribution of science to the management of upheavals. The coronavirus pandemic has revealed a lack of foresight and weak points in the areas of health care, economy, social services, and education. The statement was prepared in virtual meetings of the science academies with participation of members of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
