SUMMARY:Bridging the Baltic Sea
DESCRIPTION:During the 19th century, and up to the first decades of the 20t
h, Scandinavian physicians and natural scientists were heavily influenced b
y German academia. German was the prime scientific language in Scandinavia,
students and researchers went on study trips to Germany and published thei
r research in German journals. \n\nAlthough the exchange was encouraged fro
m both sides of the Baltic Sea, it is fair to say that Swedish researchers
had a stronger interest in German science than vice versa – what has come t
o be known as “Swedish provincialism”. However, this relationship was to ch
ange rather abruptly with the Second World War.\n\nA number of studies on S
candinavian-German scientific relations between 1933 and 1945 have been pub
lished in recent years, but the relationships after the war have not yet be
en systematically examined – particularly as regards the fields of medicine
and the natural sciences. Case studies suggest that “neutral” Scandinavian
countries could act as a gateway to the West for researchers from the GDR
and as a German-German contact zone. \n\nThe conference will focus on the t
ransfer of knowledge across the Baltic Sea as well as the personal relation
ships between researchers in Northern Europe, and not least on the politica
l and technological aspects of these contacts. \n\nThe symposium will be he
ld in English and German. It is jointly organised by the Department for the
History, Philosophy, and Ethics of Medicine, Heinrich-Heine-University Düs
seldorf, the Department for History of Medicine, Lund University, Sweden an
d the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.\n\nPicture: Mickeln H
