SUMMARY:Can Aquaculture Boost Food Security? Sustainable Fish Production in
  Brazil and Europe
DESCRIPTION:Feeding a growing global population is becoming increasingly ch
allenging, especially as climate change and biodiversity loss threaten the
foundations of today’s food systems. A fundamental shift in the production,
distribution and consumption of food is urgently needed. With its signific
ant growth potential, aquaculture can play a pivotal role.\n\nBut how can a
quaculture more effectively enhance food security in Brazil and Europe? Wha
t changes in consumer habits, technological innovation, and policy are requ
ired to sustainably increase and diversify aquaculture? The webinar “Can aq
uaculture boost food security? Sustainable fish production in Brazil and Eu
rope” addresses these questions, guided by insights from the recent science
report “Advancing sustainability and circularity in aquaculture to build a
resilient global food system”. Authored by early-career scientists from Br
azil and Germany, the report presents actionable recommendations – such as
simplifying licensing procedures, integrating sustainable freshwater aquacu
lture products into public food services, and developing local adapted mana
gement practices.\n\nThe event brings together representatives from politic
s, the aquaculture industry and science. It offers an opportunity to identi
fy courses of action, discuss potential solutions and learn from the experi
ences of the two distinct yet complementary aquaculture contexts in Brazil
and Europe.\n\nAs part of the Leopoldina International Virtual Panel Series
, the webinar provides a platform for dialogue and critical reflection: sup
porting the transfer of scientific insights into policy and practice to mak
e aquaculture a more sustainable and strategic pillar of global food system
