SUMMARY:Communicating Natural Knowledge and Medicine. Early Modern Journals
  of Learned Academies
DESCRIPTION:When, in the second half of the 17th century, three national ac
ademies were founded in Europe – the Holy Roman Empire’s Academia naturae c
uriosorum (Leopoldina) (1652) in Schweinfurt, the English Royal Society (16
60/63) in London, and the French Académie des sciences in Paris (1666) – st
yles and techniques of scientific communication changed rapidly. Whereas be
fore researchers had been communicating their experiences, inventions, and
theories through the publication of books, individual visits, or by exchang
e of learned letters and manuscripts, now other forms of communication mani
fested themselves: Organized scientific symposia if possible, but mostly sc
ientific journals.\n\nAgainst this background, the workshop planned is to f
ocus the emergence of scientific journals in the second half of the 17th ce
ntury in a comparative approach. Light will be shed on the journals’ differ
ent functions, on their diverging types of texts and illustrations, on thei
r role as carriers of old and new concepts and theories in the field of med
icine and natural knowledge, and of course on their entrepreneurs, learned
men, observers, collectors, academic travelers, editors, readers.\n\nFurthe
r Information and Registration\n\nThe symposium is open for everyone intere
sted and free of charge. A registration is not necessary.\n\nKontakt\n\nPro
