SUMMARY:Contact Tracing Apps: Promising Tool in the Fight Against COVID-19?
DESCRIPTION:In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile software applicati
ons have been developed worldwide. Such apps are part of a wider array of d
igital tools for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. The mai
n aim of contact tracing apps is to identify persons who may have had physi
cal contact to infected persons, and thus may become infected or ill. Whils
t such apps do not exclude the risk of infection, they can play a crucial r
ole in the prompt containment of the pandemic. This is particularly importa
nt in the case of superspreading events.\n\nIn Germany, the official tracin
g app was released for download on 16 June 2020. After criticism from data
protection and IT experts, the authorities have opted for a decentralised d
ata storage on the user’s smartphone. The app’s code is publicly available.
Other countries took different approaches and developed centralised digita
l tracing systems using a variety of tools, including mobile device trackin
g, bankcard payments information, facial recognition and big data-generated
behavioural patterns.\n\nOverall, contact tracing apps have raised many qu
estions in the context of COVID-19, including technical aspects, ethical co
ncerns, data protection, security, and overall effectiveness. This virtual
panel discussion compares different international approaches and experience
s from a scientific perspective.\n\nWith this event, the Leopoldina launche
s a new virtual format for global scientific exchange: Leopoldina Internati
onal – a series of virtual panels organised by Leopoldina’s International R
elations Department in cooperation with its global partners. At regular int
ervals, leading international experts present latest scientific findings. L
eopoldina International offers a virtual room for the global scientific com
munity to convene and for the public to engage in a dialogue with leading s
cientists.\n\nFurther Information and Registration\n\nThe event is addresse
d to the general public and will be held in English. Admission is free of c
