SUMMARY:From Aquafarm to Fork? Sustainable Aquaculture as Part of a Resilie
 nt Global Food System
DESCRIPTION:The Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and the German National
Academy of Sciences Leopoldina co-organize the workshop "Sustainable Aquac
ulture – Environmental Impacts and Food Security" from 16-19 October 2023 i
n Berlin. As part of this workshop, a public keynote and a roundtable discu
ssion are organized with the kind support of the Embassy of Brazil in Germa
ny.\n\nAquaculture has become an alternative for animal protein supply beca
use it converts feed more efficiently into meat than many forms of land-bas
ed husbandry. Despite these advantages, the aquacultural sector is confront
ed with concerns about its environmental and social impacts, especially reg
arding water pollution, the outbreaks and handling of diseases, and the los
s of natural habitats and ecosystems. But how can aquaculture be sustainabl
e and more efficient, ideally mitigating and not contributing to climate ch
ange?\n\nThe roundtable contemplates a blue transformation of the global fo
od system and the role sustainable aquaculture could have despite its negat
ive impacts (and image). Can sustainable aquaculture be a promising alterna
tive for the FAO’s blue growth initiative or the EU’s Sustainable Blue Econ
omy Partnership and Farm to Fork Strategy? How can aquaculture meet future
challenges of high-quality, nutritious, responsibly produced food? What are
the most promising approaches, strategies, and tools to make aquaculture m
ore sustainable and efficient? What are the best tools and techniques to or
ganize a sustainable value chain for aquaculture at a short distance? How c
an stakeholders overcome political obstacles, economic opportunity costs, a
nd consumer restraint?\n\nFurther Information and Registration\n\nThe keyno
te and roundtable discussion are open to the public, free of charge and wil
l also be broadcasted online. The event will be held in English. Prior regi
stration is required until 15 October 2023.\n\nFor participation at the Emb
assy, the security measures of the Brazilian Embassy apply.\n\nThe event wi
ll be broadcast online via Zoom.\n\nContact\n\nDr. Thomas Plötze German Nat
