SUMMARY:Gravitational Waves as Probes of Astrophysics, Gravity and Fundamen
 tal Physics
DESCRIPTION:In 2015, the first gravitational wave passing through the Earth
produced by the collision of two black holes was observed. Such an event w
as a milestone for astrophysics and confirmed the general theory of relativ
ity. Since then, about one hundred gravitational waves have been observed b
y the LIGO and Virgo experiments, including signals from binary neutron sta
rs and neutron-star—black-hole binaries. These observations rely on precise
theoretical predictions of the two-body dynamics and gravitational radiati
on.\n\nThe lecture provides an overview of the synergetic approach that suc
cessfully combines analytical and numerical relativity to produce highly ac
curate waveform models and discusses the results of these observations in r
elation to astrophysics, gravitation, and fundamental physics.\n\nAlessandr
a Buonanno ML is director at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Phy
sics, Potsdam, and a leading theorist in the field of gravitational wave ph
ysics. She is known for her work on waveform modeling, which is crucial for
the discovery of gravitational waves from binary systems of black holes an
d neutron stars.\n\nML = Member of the Leopoldina\n\nFurther Information an
